My dear Captain Rather,

You will perhaps think it surprising and even alarming to hear from me upon the subject of my ward Miss Caroline Montgomery without your having opened the correspondence yourself, especially in the present circumstances—that is, those created by Miss Montgomery’s conduct upon the fourteenth instant. I feel certain that you have learned of the disgrace into which she cast herself by her conduct, in your presence I am given to understand, to one Mr. Wendell, and I imagine that upon glancing at the subscription of this letter you must suppose the girl’s guardian to be writing to you either to beg you to, as it were, save her sinking vessel with a proposal of marriage or perhaps even to attempt to cajole such a saving proposal by threatening your own reputation in some outlandish way. I assure you I mean no such thing by this epistle.
